Ecocem celebrates 10th birthday and reaches million tonne milestone

Ecocem Materials, producer of environmentally friendly cement, has announced that the company has seen an increase in sales and has reached a significant milestone of exceeding one million tonnes of product sold in the last twelve months. Ecocem Ireland is also celebrating its tenth birthday in 2013.

The million milestone and the increase in sales, was aided by the diversification of products in Ireland, including the introduction of its eco-friendly cement in 25kg bags earlier this year, as well as a steady rise of sales in France.

Ecocem has three subsidiaries across Europe – Ireland, Benelux and France – selling cement across seven countries. The company was set up in 2000, beginning in 2002 with Orecem (Benelux) followed by Ecocem Ireland in 2003. In its first ten years in business Ecocem Ireland’s cement has been used in a number of landmark building projects including the Aviva Stadium, the Convention Centre Dublin, Cork Civic Offices, and the Waterford Cable-Stayed Bridge.

Commenting on the news, Donal O’Riain, founder and managing director of Ecocem said: “We are hopeful that we will see sales continuing to rise in 2014, as we expect to benefit further from the ever increasing appreciation of the environmental, technical and aesthetic benefits offered by our cement, as well as its cost effectiveness.”

He added: “We have worked hard this year to deliver this innovative product in a new form in our 25kg bag, and also to continue to raise awareness of the environmental issues in the construction sector and the environmental benefits our product offers.”

It has been a busy year for Ecocem, in February 2013 the company opened a new plant at Dublin port, which was part of a three year, €19m investment programme. The plant is used to bag Ecocem’s eco-friendly cement, which among other things reduces the carbon footprint of traditional cement by over 50%. It is the highest quality, lowest carbon cement product produced in Ireland.

In September 2013, Ecocem Ireland released a consultation document outlining a carbon reduction roadmap for the cement and concrete sector. The roadmap is a response to the government’s request for input into formulating a national roadmap in 2014 which will bring Ireland into line with the EU target to reduce CO2 emissions by 85% and transition to a low-carbon economy by 2050.
